In case you want to fuel up your car it is not recommended to use a flow rate of 10 ul/min. For a 50 liter tank, it takes just a little less than 10 years to fill it. However, these flow rates are relevant for neonates (too early born babies) as already a flow rate of 16 ul/min can already distort the fluid balance.

A transfer standard can be transported. Transfer standards are required when the drug delivery devices cannot be transferred to the primary standard, e.g. because transport is too complicated, the delivery devices are in constant use or if there are many delivery devices that require calibration. Hence, in addition to primary standards, reliable transfer (secondary) standards are also required.

The metrological infrastructure consists of the equipment, procedures and qualified personal to carry out the necessary calibrations.

This joint research project will also have an important impact in sectors other than in health alone. The assessment of (commercially) available flow meters will help flow manufactures to improve their products. Micro flow meters are, for example, also used in High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), drug production, lab on a chip and various other applications based on MEMs and NENs (respectively, Micro and Nano Electrical Machines).
